Mid-January: Visual Rhetoric and Current Events

One item in current events related to visual rhetoric is the discussion over the recent shooting in Arizona.  Some commentators are partially blaming the heated political rhetoric of recent years for fanning the flames of hatred in this country.  One visual image pointed out by some commentators after the shooting, is a graphic created on Sarah Palin's web site (now taken down) which shows gun cross hairs depicted on congressional districts of "the opposition."  One of those districts is that of victim Gabrielle Giffords.

"And So It Begins . . . "

I thought I had better get my own IN151 Visual Rhetoric blog started, in preparation for the Spring 2011 version of the class.  The beauty of teaching a class in visual rhetoric is that there is always fresh, new material to be analyzed with every passing day.

One "text" source that we will be examining often in the semester is the New York Times Photo Blog:

Another site where we will begin some theoretical investigations is this one:

There is an online textbook on the topic of Visual Rhetoric, but it is not quite developed enough yet to use as a full-fledged classroom textbook:
